A Brief History of AI, How Far has it Come ?
The history of artificial intelligence (AI) spans several decades, marked by key milestones and shifts in both technology and philosophical understanding. Here's a brief overview:
AI's start, the first AI programs (1950s):
AI’s start can
be traced all the way to 1956 with the Dartmouth Conference, this is when research
into artificial intelligence began, after John McCarthy, an American Computer
Scientist, coined the term in 1955.
One of the
earliest Ai systems was Eliza, an original chatbot which was created by an MIT
computer scientist in 1966, it was created as therapy simulation, intended to answer
questions based on previous recycled responses.
AI’s development:
In its
development, AI faced a multitude of obstacles and challenges, many early
projects never saw the light of day and developers were finding it difficult to
find a way to include AI in everyday life.
However, by
the 1980s, there was a boom in AI development, stemming from breakthroughs in
research, additional funding and more support towards researchers. Deep
Learning techniques became more widely used, which would allow computers to
learn from their mistakes and make independent decisions.
Modern AI:
During the early 2000s, Machine learning became more powerful, and systems can now learn from data instead of relying on pre-programmed data.
AI has become more practical for everyday use, with the development of voice assistants such as Alexa, generative AI, and autonomous vehicles, AI’s presence in everyday life is become greater every year.
With its
advancement in many areas, such as: Healthcare, Autonomous Machinery and in the
Arts, it is up to the developers and the users to insure that further
development and use is done in an ethical and professional manner.
AI’s unstoppable future:
AI is designed
to continue evolving, and though it has already made numerous breakthroughs, it
is not nearly as powerful as it could be.
AI has gone from a speculative concept to a transformative technology, as it is continuing to progress rapidly, we must ask ourselves, how far can it go?
